Born in Western Australia in 1927, Arthur Russell was awarded a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Australia in 1952 and a Diploma in Art from the East Sydney Technical College in 1953. An abstract expressionist painter, film maker and teacher, he exhibited in Perth from 1969 and Sydney from 1971. He taught at secondary level from 1951 to 1965 and at tertiary level at various institutions from 1966 to 1994. In 1991 a retrospective of his work was held at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of Western Australia in 1991.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,760 for York Gum Sanctuary sold by GFL Fine Art in May 2018.
