Charles Worsley was born in Devonshire England, and arrived in New Zealand from England in 1897. He was a professional artist who exhibited with the Royal Academy in London several times between 1889 and 1894 and metropolitan art societies between 1898 and 1922. He lived in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, and is known to have travelled extensively back-and-forth to Europe during this time, too, where he often painted directly from life. He is particularly well known for his city scenes in Europe.

Charles Worsley is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1970 of 539, of which 384 (71%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $39,358 for The Champagne Pool at Wairakei sold by Webb's in July 1997. This year 9 works have been offered for sale. Works by Charles Worsley are held by the Auckland Art Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
