Born in Melbourne in 1953, Julie Irving studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne, and was awarded a Diploma of Art in 1953, at The University of Melbourne where she was awarded a BA in in 1972 and at the Victorian College of the Arts where she was awarded a Post Graduate Diploma. An abstract artist she has exhibited her paintings in solo and group shows in Melbourne and Sydney from 1973. In 1977 she was awarded the Alliance Francais Scholarship and in 1980 she won the Georges Invitation Art Prize in Melbourne. She has taught part time at tertiary level in various institutions in Melbourne from 1977 to the 1990s.
