Born in Victoria in 1922, Middleton studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne under William Rowell. He also studied privately with Septimus Power. Power was both a mentor and a friend who strongly influenced Max's career. His first solo exhibition was in 1946 and over his lifetime he held 60 exhibitions throughout Australia. In the early 1950s he painted for two years in Europe and studied in London and Paris. He is principally a landscape painter, but also chose other diverse subjects.

Max Middleton is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1974 of 716, of which 447 (62%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $8,800 for Cattle from the High Country sold by Leonard Joel in November 1991. This year one work has been offered for sale.
