Born in England in 1937, James Thomson studied at the Hornsey College of Art, North London from 1959-1962. He moved in Australia in 1962, settling in Townsville where he became a member of the Townsville Art Society. During his 10 years in Townsville, he travelled extensively throughout Northern Australia. His earlier works are signed 'Jim Thomson', but he later moved to signing as 'James Thomson', which is the signature on the majority of his works. Several trips were made into the Gulf Country as far as Karumba, Gulf of Carpentaria, collecting subject matter and sketching the old wooden and corrugated iron pubs and mine diggings. Other trips were made to the Chillagoe country and thence up to Cooktown on Cape York Peninsula. These travels yielded a wealth of interesting material including country race meetings. after being involved with the Townsville Art Society, helping organise society and travelling exhibitions, and winning several local Art Prizes, he moved to Sydney in 1972. Thomson continued painting country subjects, collecting a lot of his material from Sofala and Hill End.
