Born in 1938 in Perth, Gough studied at the Perth Technical College and later exhibited and taught at the Claremont School of Fine Art, as well as being an art critic for Perth newspaper, a member of the Festival of Perth Art Committee and President of the Contemporary Art Society (W.A. Branch). In 1974 he moved to Melbourne to become a lecturer in painting at Caulfield Institute of Technology. He was appointed Head of Department in Fine Art and Senior Lecturer in Painting before leaving in 1994 to paint full time. He lives and work in Central Victoria.
