Born in 1896 in St Kilda East, Victoria, Joan Lindsay (nee Joan Weigall) was the wife of Sir Daryl Lindsay, and known as both a writer and watercolourist. After leaving school she enrolled in art classes at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). From 1916 to 1918 Joan was a pupil of Frederick McCubbin at the NGV’s, School of Drawing and in 1919 she studied life drawing and painting under the head of the art school, Bernard Hall. She had a solo exhibition in Melbourne in 1920 and from 1921 she exhibited with the Victorian Society of Artists and the New South Wales Society of Artists. As a writer, she was best known for her book Picnic at hanging Rock. She died in 1984 and bequethed the family home, Mulberry Hill at Baxter in Victoria to the National Trust.
