Born in Holland in 1946, Robert Franken studied at the Royal Academy of Art and the Free Academy of Art prior to his arrival in New Zealand in 1967. An abstract artist working in a variety of media, he first exhibited in 1972 in Wellington and since then has exhibited at least annually throughout New Zealand and in Japan, Switzerland, Australia, Netherlands and China. He has won a number of awards, including the QEII Arts Council Material Grant in 1977 and 1986, QEll Arts Council Studio Grant in 1984 and the BP Art Award in 1990.
