Born in Melbourne in 1932, Peter Upward studied at RMIT from 1948 to 1949, the East Sydney Technical College, the Julian Ashton School from 1951 to 1953. His first solo exhibition was in Melbourne in 1959 and since then has exhibited in Sydney and Melbourne and overseas in solo and group shows in Londona and Berlin.He lived in London from 1962 to 1971 and on his return he exhibited a series of large abstract action-style paintings in Melbourne and Sydney.

We have records of art auction sales by Peter Upward from 1975 and in total 82 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 55 (67%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $329,400 for Crown Street Indigo 1960 sold by Sotheby's in May 2018. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Peter Upward are held by the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of NSW and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
