Born in England in 1803, Nixon was educated at the Merchant Tailors' School, London. After a period at Oxford he was ordained in the Church of England, and was appointed the first Bishop of Tasmania in 1842. During his period in Tasmania he sketched and painted, and in 1854 published the book, 'Cruise of the Beacon'.
