About Eleanor Kate Sperry
Born in Geelong, Victoria in 1862, Kate Sperry moved to new Zealand with her family the following year. She studied in Rome in the early 1880s, won a gold medal in the Prix de Rome competition, She returned to New Zealand in 1885. Eleanor Sperry is known for her portraits in oil and watercolour of many of the most noted statesmen of New Zealand. She was also admired for her sculpture. She exhibited widely both in New Zealand and Australia.
