Born in London in 1827, John Austin arrived in Adelaide with his family in 1834. After experience as a farmer on the family property, Austin opened a shop at Beechworth in Victoria, then worked as an accountant on the Kapunda Mines in South Australia. He became an expert on mining and a journalist; amongst his achievements were his publication: 'The Mines of South Australia' 1863 and the founding of the 'Gawler Times' in 1870. He made sketches and lithographs of South Australia and produced a number of lithographs of the local aboriginal population. He also published a set of topographical views of Sydney, several from drawings of the surveyor Robert Russell.
