Born in South Australia of English parents in 1885, Henry Lamb moved to England as a child. He qualified as a doctor and, prior to World War I, studied art in Paris. During World War II he served as an official war artist. He was trustee of both the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate Gallery. Lamb's works are represented in most major English collections.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $5,287 for Bathers Surprised sold by Amanda Addams Auctions in December 2003.
