Born in Benalla, Victoria in 1874, Matthew MacNally studied in Melbourne under John Mather, and later in England. He was noted for watercolours painted in the impressionistic style. MacNally also wrote art critiques for a number of daily Sydney and Melbourne newspapers. He was a member of the Australian Art Association and a foundation member of the Australian Watercolour Institute and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, London. He exhibited with the Fine Arts Society and in Melbourne at Seddon Galleries.
