Born in Germany in 1922, Frank Werther arrived in Australia in 1939. After the end of World War II he worked in a number outdoor jobs, while studying art at the National Gallery School, Melbourne and at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. His first solo exhibition was in 1960 and he continued exhibiting until the 1990s. He and his wife established painting school in the late 1960s in Hawthorn which later moved to Cottlesbridge which operated until about 2009.
The earliest auction listing we have for Frank Werther is in 1975 and in total 59 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 36 (61%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,450 for Near Point Franklin sold by Phillips Auctioneers in July 2001. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Frank Werther are held by the Ian Potter Museum of Art and National Gallery of Victoria.
