Born in Egypt in 1938, Raft arrived in Australia in 1956. He studied at the Brera Academy in Milan, Italy from 1959 to 1960 and at the City Art Institute in Sydney in 1986. An abstract-expressionist artist, jeweller and sculptor he has worked and exhibited since 1962 in Australia, UK, USA and France. In 2015 the National Gallery commenced preparations to reprise one of his major exhibitions on its 50th anniversary, The Field first shown in 1968, with some of the works in the original display having to be remade.

The total number of works by Emanuel Raft offered for sale by auction since 1971 is 88, of which 49 (56%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $4,370 for Playground sold by Christies in June 2000. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Emanuel Raft are held by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
