Born in New Zealand in 1898, Alastair Cameron Gray arrived in Australia as a teenager in 1911. He studied architecture at the University of Melbourne in 1924. From the mid 1920s to c1950 he worked for in South Africa for the Anglo American Mining Trust. As an artist, he studied under Harold Herbert and was principally a watercolourist. From 1950 he was a regular exhibitor at the Victorian Artists Society and was secretary from 1956 to 1959. He was awarded the Victorian Artist Society prize for watercolours in 1958.
