Born in Queensland in 1945, Peart studied at the Brisbane Technical College and held his first major exhibition at the Watters Gallery in 1967. Later that year he exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne. He lived in England in the early 1970s returning to Sydney in the mid 1970s. He exhibited regularly in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney, as well as participating in numerous group exhibitions. He won the Wynne Prize in 1997, the Archibald Prize in 1998, and the Sulman Prize in 1994 and 2000.
