Thomas Chapman was born in England in 1788 and arrived in Hobart in 1834. He was a teacher at the Mechanics Institute in Hobart c1840 and specialised in drawings of street scenes and portraits. He illustrated Six Views of of Hobart town, 1844. He is represented Tasmania and Launceston Museums and Hobart Art Gallery.
