Born in Victoria in 1911, Read studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne. He worked his way to Queensland via Sydney, taking a variety of jobs. He became a leading Queensland artist and had several successful exhibitions.

The earliest auction listing we have for Arthur Read is in 1972 and in total 33 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 28 (85%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,880 for Landscape with Canefields sold by Lawson~Menzies (now trading as Menzies) in June 2009.
