The daughter of artist J. K. Richmond, Dorothy Richmond was born in Auckland in 1861, but lived in Nelson for many years. She went to Europe to further her education, and in 1878 won a scholarship to Slade School in London. Richmond returned to New Zealand in 1881 and continued to teach and study art and, from 1885, to exhibit with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington. She returned to England in in 1898 and studied at the Newlyn School of art, and then in 1901 she and Frances Hodgkins set off on sketching tours in Europe and North Africa. Richmond returned to new Zealand in 1904 and became very influential in art circles in Wellington where she taught privately from 1903.
