Born on the island of St Helena in 1810, Balcombe arrived in Australia in 1825. The son of colonial secretary, William Balcombe, he became a draughtsman for the Surveyor-General's Department. By 1837 he had become a proficient painter and illustrator, specialising in Aboriginal and native animal paintings.
