Hiroe Swen, a painter, ceramic and batik artist, teacher and gallery director was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1934, where she studied painting and ceramics between 1949 and 1962. In 1968 she married the Dutch/Australian artist Cornell Swen and moved to Sydney, and after two years to Queanbeyan, New South where the couple set up a gallery in 1973. She lectured at the Canberra Institute of the Arts from 1981-1999. She has exhibited extensively in Australia and Japan commencing in 1957 as well as conducting regular workshops.

We have records of art auction sales by Hiroe Swen from 1997 and in total 31 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 25 (81%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,708 for Vase, c.1977 sold by Mossgreen Auctions in May 2011. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2021. Works by Hiroe Swen are held by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
