Sarah Jane Shand (nee Sutherst) was born about 1862 in Yorkshire, England. She was the wife of well-known medico Dr John Cappie Shand. Seeking a warmer climate, the couple emigrated to Australia in 1887 with their children, where they came to reside in Penrith, New South Wales. She created 'Nellie the Cook', an image of an Aboriginal woman wearing a blanket as a shawl. Nellie is said to have worked on the Shand family's station in western NSW, where the artist painted her. She died on the 26th of September 1938.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1998.
