Born in Auckland in 1960, abstract artist Julian Dashper studied at Elam School of Fine Art from 1978 and had his first solo exhibition while still a student. In 2001 he was awarded a senior Fulbright fellowship to be based as an artist in residence Texas. During his career he participated in over 100 solo exhibitions worldwide. Major New Zealand exhibitions include Julian Dashper's Greatest Hits, Govett Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth (1992); The Big Bang Theory, Artspace (1994); and The Twist, Waikato Museum of Art and History (1998). In 2005-2006, a mid-career survey of Dashper?s work, Midwestern Unlike You and Me, curated by Christopher Cook and David Raskin, traveled throughout the United States, including to the Sioux City Art Center, Sioux City, Iowa; Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, Lincoln, Nebraska; and Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, Kansas. In 2005 a 25 year travelling restrospective of his work was held in the United States and was Visiting Scholar at the University of Sydney in 2008. He was regarded as one of New Zealand's best known contemporary artists.
The total number of works by Julian Dashper offered for sale by auction since 1990 is 202, of which 137 (68%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $90,513 for Russian Cruise Ship, Princes Wharf sold by Webb's in September 2022. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Julian Dashper are held by the Auckland Art Gallery, Museum Of New Zealand and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
