Born in France in 1778, Charles Lesueur was a naturalist and zoological artist. He studied at the Royal Military School and in 1800 joined the 'Naturaliste' on a surveying expedition along Australia's southern and western coastline. Lesueur made detailed drawings of Aborigines, and assisted the chief zoologist Peron to sketch the wildlife. Their work was recorded in a three volume account of the voyage. From 1816 to 1825. Lesueur worked as a natural sciences curator in Philadelphia, United States of America and then taught drawing in Indiana until 1837.
We have records of art auction sales by Charles Lesueur from 1976 and in total 55 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 46 (84%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $292,800 for Cases De La Terre De Lewin (Geographe Bay, W.a.), Probably June 1801 sold by Deutscher and Hackett in November 2018. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Charles Lesueur are held by the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
