Born in New Zealand in 1929, John Henshaw studied at the Julian Ashton School and in Europe. He travelled in Europe in the late 1950s and then returned to Australia in 1960, becoming a teacher at East Sydney Technical College. He was also a critic and art writer for the 'Bulletin' and the 'Australian'.and general editor of the Lansdowne Art Library series. Henshaw was now Australian representative of the London auctioneers, Christie, Manson and Woods from 1970 to 1975.
