Francis Guillemard De Wesselow (previously Simpkinson) was born in England in 1819 and arrived in Australia in 1844, settling in Hobart. A painter, diarist, and naval officer he travelled around Tasmania painting landscapes with J. S. Prout whose style he modelled. He exhibited one work in 1845 at the Hobart Town Art Exhibition, which was the first major art exhibition in the colonies and 3 works in the exhibition of 1846. He returned to England in 1849, retiring from the Royal Navy in 1870 and moved to the south of France to live. He died in London in 1906.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1997.
