Born in Sydney in 1878, Leist studied art at Sydney Technical College before becoming a student of the Art Society of New South Wales; and England, first coming under public notice as an artist for the 'Bulletin' and 'Sydney Mail'. In 1908 he went to London with his family and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists and to the Chelsea Arts Club in 1913 and in 2014 to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. On his return to Australia in 1926 he was appointed head teacher at the East Sydney Technical College.
The total number of works by Frederick Leist offered for sale by auction since 1969 is 385, of which 249 (65%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $47,058 for A Bathing Party, Sydney Harbour sold by Christies in December 1988. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
