Born in 1903 in Ontario, Canada, Charlton Edgar studied in USA and Europe prior to his arrival in New Zealand in 1940. He served in World War II, and after the war he taught at the Dunedin School of Art, and director of art at Auckland Teachers college for 23 years. He was later director of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery from 1965 until his retirement in 1971. In the 1976 he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to art.
We have records of art auction sales by James Edgar from 1977 and in total 75 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 59 (79%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,208 for Frankton Landscape sold by Dunbar Sloane in February 2022. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by James Edgar are held by the Museum Of New Zealand.
