Dick Baker was a New Zealand based self-taught marine artist, working in oils and watercolours, depicting scenes from from the 19th century to the present day. He was born near Bristol, England and went to sea at the age of 16 as a cadet with the New Zealand Shipping Company. He continued his maritime career, rising through the merchant shipping ranks to become Captain of his own vessel before he retired. During his spare time he painted. His work was exhibited at the Society of Marine Artists in London, the Mystic Gallery in Connecticut (the prime U.S. marine art gallery) and at galleries in London, British Columbia and Auckland. His work is included in the permanent collections of the British Maritime Museum, the Marine Society, the University of Southampton and in private collections including the P & O group.
The earliest auction listing we have for Dick Baker is in 1997 and in total 32 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 21 (66%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,386 for The Pamir Leaving Wellington sold by Dunbar Sloane in November 2007. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2016.
