Born in Collingwood, Melbourne in 1860, Iso Rae studied at the School of Fine Arts at the National Gallery of Victoria. With her sister, Alison, who was also a painter, she established life classes with the Victorian Art Society in Melbourne. In 1887 Rae left Melbourne with her mother and sister bound for Paris, and the company of other Australian artists living and working in Paris. She studied at the Academie Colarossii and came under the influence of Rupert Bunny, Marie Tuck, Tudor St. George and E. Phillips Fox. The Rae family travelled to Etaples a well-known artists’ colony, for the summer in 1890 and moved there pemanently in 1893 after which she continued to paint and exhibit at Le Toquet. During her early years in Europe Iso continued to exhibit her work in Australia, including with the Victorian Artists’ Society in 1896, and in Dunedin New Zealand in 1889-90. At the end of World War I she moved to the small village of Trepied, near Etaples, where she stayed until 1932, then moved England to live at St Leonards in Sussex.
