Art teacher and sculptor Owen Broughton was born 1922 in Townsville, Queensland. He served in 2nd A.I.F. In 1942 for five years and saw service in the Pacific and Borneo. After the war, he studied sculpture at East Sydney Technical College from 1946 under Lyndon Dadswell and was assistant to Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth in England from 1950 to 1951. He was on the staff of the National Art School, Sydney until 1962, and in that year he accepted a lecturer position at the South Australia School of Art. He was described as an enthusiastic and very effective teacher whilst his technical knowledge, energy and efficiency give his sculptures unusual originality. His public commissions included sculptures in Adelaide, Canberra and Mildura.
