Born in England in 1853, H. Edward Davies arrived in Australia as an infant in 1854. He became an artist and architect, and was the chief draughtsman in the South Australian Education Department. He became Honorary Curator of the Adelaide Gallery and Chairman of the Board of Management of the Public Art Gallery and Museum of South Australia.

We have records of art auction sales by H. Edward Davies from 1967 and in total 27 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 15 (56%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,145 for Towards Mt. Lofty, Adelaide Hills sold by Elder Fine Art in August 2005.
