Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1853, Mather arrived in Australia in 1860. He worked as a journalist in Western Victoria and became staff artist for a daily newspaper, The Adelaide Advertiser and Express from 1893 to 1899, and then was art critic for the paper for the next 15 years. . He was an Associate Member of the South Australian Society of Artists and was known as a landscape and marine artist working in watercolour.
