A painter of harbour scenes, seascapes and ships, Gainor Jackson was born in 1926 in Devonport, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, and spent his early years observing and sketching the maritime traffic in Auckland Harbour. In 1962 he wrote The New Zealand Beach and Boating Book which sold 10,000 copies; in 1963 The Australian Beach and Boating Book was published, and later, in 1969, he co-authored the book Concrete Boatbuilding: Its Techniques and Its Future, of which 13,000 sold, mostly to the USA, and in 1975 Collins published-a book of Jackson's harbour paintings and sketches, Reflections on Auckland Harbour. Jackson's works are in many private collections and in commercial and shipping offices both in N2 overseas.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $4,345 for S.S. Ngapuhi, Mansion House Bay, Kawau sold by Webb's in October 1992.
