Henry Boddington was a brewer who ran the family firm of Boddington' s Brewery in Manchester until 1886, when, at the age of thirty seven he decided to devote his time to painting. In 1889 he visited New Zealand and journeyed by boat from Dunedin in South Island to Wellington via Lyttelton. He continued his journey to Masterton and visited the estates of the Hon. A.J. Balfour at Pahiatua and the Duke of Manchester before continuing to Palmerston, Wanganui, Marton and back to Wellington painting as he travlled. From Wellington he sailed home then returned to Etaples near the Pas de Calais where he worked alongside Sickert and Brangwyn, amongst others.
