Zusters was a Latvian born Australian artist. He studied Art and Architecture at the Riga Technical College, Latvia, from 1935 to 1940. He was conscripted into the German Army in World War II and after the warthe family became refugees, living in Displaced Persons camps in Germany for 7 years. The family arrived in Perth in 1950, and soon after moved to New South Wales and then Canberra, where he held his first exhibition in 1951 with another show in 1956, after which they moved to Sydney. He worked as a designer until 1968 when he resigned to become a full time artist. From 1970 he exhibited regularly in Australia and overseas. For the Australian Bicentenary in 1988, Zusters completed his grandest work, a series of massive panels entitled The Birth of a Nation. He won the Bronze Prize in the 1990 Osaka Triennale ’90 and the Special Prize at the Osaka Triennale ’93 in 1993.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $38,488 for Garden Tryptch sold by Archers Auctioneers & Valuers in November 2006. This year 18 works have been offered for sale.
