Born in Scotland in 1854, Henry Kirkwood arrived in New Zealand about 1879 and worked as a teacher and professional artist, painting mainly landscapes in oil. He appears to have moved quite frequently throughout both north and south islands. In 1924 he moved to Sydney where he died a year later.
