Born in England in 1882, studied at Leeds School and at the Royal College of Art, London. Godson went to New Zealand in 1911, arriving in Australia in 1914. HOn his arrival in Sydney he became a teacher at the East Sydney Technical College and a member of the Australian Painters and Etchers Society.
The total number of works by John Godson offered for sale by auction since 1974 is 206, of which 114 (55%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,705 for Mosman Bay sold by Gregsons in December 1995. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by John Godson are held by the Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Victoria and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
