Born in Dunedin in 1962, Neville Smitheram studied at Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland, graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts. Much of Smitheram's painting is conducted in encaustic wax, a traditional painting technique in which pigment is bound in a mix of beeswax and tree resin. He exhibited extensively in Auckland before returning to his home town of Levin, 550km south of Auckland, where he lives and works in a large studio space in the semi-industrial part of town.
