Sketcher, architect, builder and pastoralist Samuel Jackson was born in London in 1807, and arrived at Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land, with two of his brothers in 1829. Initially setting up as a builder it Launceston he soon also purchased an architectural practice. He arrived at Port Phillip (Melbourne) in 1835 with one of his brothers and farmed at Sunbury for four years. After which he returned to Melbourne and established the town's first private architectural practice. He designed many buildings in Melbourne and Geelong between about 1840 and 1855: In 1841 Samuel Jackson drew a 'Panoramic Sketch Of Melbourne Port Phillip from the walls of Scots Church on the Eastern Hill'. (5.48 m x 45.7 cm), which was purchased by the Victorian Government from Jackson's descendants in 1888, now in the State Library of Victoria. In 1847 he purchased a large rural property near Casterton in the Western District of Victoria. He married in 1852; and he and his family returned to England in 1862. Samuel Jackson died at his Georgian mansion in Enfield, Middlesex, on 7 May 1876 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery, London.
