Born in 1793 in England, Augustus Earle was the son of James Earle and nephew of Ralph Earle - two well known American painters. He studied at the Royal Academy in London. He arrived in Hobart in 1825, and then moved to Sydney where he painted portraits and eight panoramic views of Sydney which were later published in the 'Australian Scrap Book' (1830). He visited New Zealand from 1827 to 1828 where he painted landscapes and portraits, as well as views of Maori life and culture. Earle left Australia around 1830.
The earliest auction listing we have for Augustus Earle is in 1975 and in total 41 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 30 (73%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $176,900 for Sketch of Mr Prout N. S. Wales, c.1828 sold by Deutscher and Hackett in May 2016. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Augustus Earle are held by the National Gallery of Australia, Auckland Art Gallery and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
