Born in Adelaide in 1885, Grigg studied at the South Australian School of Design under Harry Pelling Gill. In 1904 she was Hans Heysen's first pupil when he started art classes in Adelaide. Principally a portrait painter, she won the first Melrose Prize with a portrait of her father and the second with a portrait of James Ashton. She was a Fellow of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts, and was appointed Senior Art Mistress at the Ballarat Art School.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,955 for 'Portrait of Thomas Grigg' for the Archibald Competition sold by Scammell Auctions in August 2020. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by May Grigg are held by the Art Gallery of South Australia.
