James Robert Hutchings was born on the Isle of Wight in 1872, and arrived in Hobart, Australia with his family in 1883. He worked at painting theatre scenery and moved to Sydney in 1897 where he worked painting scenery at the Tivoli theatre. James Hutchings was a prolific painter in early 1900s. He painted New Zealand landscapes, Sydney Harbour scenes, Blue Mountains landscapes and rural scenes. Many of his paintings were reproduced in postcards in early 1900s.
