Martha Berkeley (nee Chauncy) was born in Keynsham, England in 1813. After she married Captain Charles Berkeley, she migrated to Australia in 1836, settling Adelaide where she painted landscapes and buildings in the environs of that city. She also painted portrait miniatures on commission. She moved to Portland Victoria in 1855 and following her husband's death the following year she moved to Melbourne, where she supported herself and her family with portrait commissions and teaching. She died in Camberwell, Victoria in 1877.
