Born in South Australia in 1875, Ferries studied at the South Australian School of Art and at the Slade School, London. Returning to Australia, he became known for his watercolour landscapes floral still lifes and sensitive portraits of Aboriginal people. He is represented in the South Australian Art Gallery, which purchased a examples of his works, and a further collection of drawings and paintings were donated to the South Australian Museum.
We have records of art auction sales by James Ferries from 1976 and in total 42 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 24 (57%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,220 for River Murray Landscape Above Mannum, South Australia; Portrait of a Gentleman: Double-sided sold by Christies in August 1994.
