Lionel James Cowen was born c1847 in Jamaica. He presumably moved back to England and became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and is believed to have exhibited his oil paintings at the Royal Academy, British Institute and the Grosvenor Gallery, London. He moved to Sydney in 1889 and set up a studio in Ash Street off 346 George Street. He travelled to Tasmania and painted scenes in Hobart and Launceston which he exhibited in the Tasmanian International Exhibition in 1891-92. He died on board the Oruba in the Indian Ocean, on 7 July 1895 aged 48.
