Born in England in 1824, Charles Hill studied in London and Newcastle before coming to Australia in 1854. He taught at several art schools in Adelaide and started an art school in his own house. In 1856 he became the first president of the South Australian Society of Arts; on the forming of the School of Design in 1861 he became the first art master.
