Maurice Stubbs was born in the Western Australia town of Geraldton near Perth in October of 1924. After war service he studied at the national Art School in Sydney, and then returned to Perth where he achieved prominence as a rising young artist as member of its modernistic post war art scene. He migrated to Canada in 1959 and in 1969 was appointed the first full-time curator of the art collection of the McIntosh Gallery at Western University, Ontario Canada. He abandoned abstraction to embrace the Canadian landscape as a fertile subject for the body of work he produced. In 2015 the McIntosh Gallery published Maurice Stubbs Intuitive Painter.
